| OVERVIEW This is an area of strength in WA - we host many cooperative Research Centres and Centres of
Excellence as well as Technology Park. Research carried out at the
centres often leads to the commercialisation of products - so it isn't
just about academia. WATRI, a joint venture between Curtin University
and UWA that's focused on telecommunications research, for example, has
established four start-up companies: ISPire Networks Pty Ltd, Sensear
Pty Ltd, Xelor Software and Atmosphere Networks.
Another centre and focal point for advanced computing is iVEC, which
is a joint venture involving CSIRO, Curtin University of Technology, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch
University and the University of Western Australia. iVEC has three facilities providing access to
cutting-edge, high-performance computing and visualisation laboratories
via grid technologies and e-Research services. AMTC (Advanced
Manufacturing Technologies Centre) at Central TAFE also provides an
R&D service to help companies develop new products from concept to
prototype - and beyond.
Technology Park, Bentley is home to over 100 organisations, most of
them involved in ICT. Tech Park generates major research activity from
CoEs such as CSIRO and the Australian Resources Research Centre. The
WA Government is expanding the park into an ICT Precinct where people can
work, research, network, live and play. The aim is to transform it into
Australia's premier ICT destination. This is just a small sample of the
centres in WA that support serious, technology-related R&D!
WA launches blueprint for Australia's biggest ICT precinct
"The Bentley Technology Precinct will become a
destination where business meets research and research has access to
business; where knowledge is shared among companies and partnerships
are established.
"The precinct will become a lifestyle,
integrating people, business, technology and education within an
energetic and vibrant environment. Cafes, bars and restaurants will become
boardrooms and central, shared facilities will provide mentoring and
support for companies at all stages of commercialisation.
"The precinct will be an environment where
established businesses can grow and new businesses have opportunities
and support to develop, further strengthening the future growth of the
state's economy."
