Telecommunications

OVERVIEW

Western Australia's telecommunication industry is more than a phone service between your family and friends. Our companies have developed novel technologies to resolve WA's remoteness through satellite telecommunications, radio and voice over internet protocol.

The industry itself ranges from broadband internet to latest-generation wireless technologies - from aeronautical and maritime navigation to radio astronomy and satellite-based meteorology - from phone and fax services to TV broadcasting. The sector also encompasses audio, video, teleconferencing; billing and cards; broadcasting and cable; cable communications; equipment; fibre optics; interactive voice response; and general telecommunications. The wireless technologies include appliances, broadband, telephony (eg mobiles and teleconferencing), and equipment.

Spurred on by increased competition, government subsidies, regulatory policy and market developments, the telecommunications sector is experiencing rapid technological change - and this is set to continue.

iiNet set to purchase Westnet for $81 million

TELECOMMUNICATIONS company iiNet will buy Westnet for $81 million in cash, to reinforce its position as Australia's third biggest internet service provider.  Westnet, Australia's sixth largest ISP, will bring 215,000 phone and internet subscriptions, raising Perth-headquartered iiNet's total to more than 680,000.  iiNet's dial-up and broadband subscribers are set to grow to 470,000 through the acquisition, which the company expects to complete by the end of the month.  The combined subscriber base of the two companies would cover more than 30 per cent of the Western Australian market, iiNet said.

"Both Westnet and iiNet have always focused on genuine plain speaking customer service, seeing that as the only really sustainable differentiator in our business," iiNet managing director Michael Malone said in the statement.  "Westnet has consistently set the benchmark for service in our industry, and I look forward to learning how we can improve iiNet's service even further."
