Daniel Griggs - Software Engineer

What do you do?
I'm a data administration and research officer for Kimberley TAFE. I assist Corporate Managers with the analysis of data relating to their areas of responsibility and help develop custom web-based and standalone software applications for the college.

What do you love about your work?
The challenge of solving a wide range of problems related to how the college collects, manages and analyses data. This job is very unique and very rewarding as it provides an opportunity for me to develop my technical skills in software engineering, web development, database management, data analysis, quality control, and problem solving.

What is the money like?
I earn around $60,000 a year. I believe this is quite a good starting point considering I only graduated from university two years ago.

How did you get to where you are today?
After finishing school at 16 I went straight to TAFE where I studied for a Certificate II, III, and IV in Information Technology. After TAFE, I went to Edith Cowan University, where I undertook a BSc in Software Engineering and further progressed to post-graduate studies to obtain a First Class Honours in Computer Technology. During and after finishing university studies I had various jobs developing complex web-site applications, standalone software products, and teaching computer technology. These industry-related jobs helped develop my practical skills, which assisted me during my study years as well as with my career.

What made you decide to work in ICT?
My interest in computers started when I was twelve. I love problem solving, hence the love of computer programming. This industry is developing rapidly and very information intensive. ICT is employed by almost every other industry making it a very interesting and rewarding area to be involved in.

Is the ICT industry what you expected?
Yes, it is everything I expected and more. It continues to advance at such a rapid pace that I struggle to keep up with it at times.

What do you find interesting about working in ICT?
The challenges, problems and developments that arise on a daily basis.

Where do you see your job in ICT taking you?
The career opportunities for me are practically unlimited. I would like to work as a consultant in a specialised field in ICT.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in ICT?
Focus on your education to start with. At the same time you should have a passion to explore areas of ICT that interests you. Keep yourself up-to-date with latest advances in technology and if possible find practical work in the industry. It is important to get your qualifications, but it is equally important to build your industry experience and practical skills.

Why would you encourage others to get into the ICT industry?
The ICT industry provides excellent career opportunities. It is a fast developing industry and not likely to slow down or become obsolete anytime soon.
