Daniel DSouza - Computer Support Engineer

Bio: I came to Australia two years ago to do a Masters in Computer Science after I finished my Bachelor of Computer Science in India. Initially I was interested in Physics, but a career in IT seemed more appealing because it would allow me time to pursue other interests.

What do you do?
I'm a computer support engineer at the School of Computer and Information Science at Edith Cowan University

What do you love about your work?
I get to learn on the job, so paid learning really. Also it's a very rewarding role because people come to me for answers - and I usually have them.

What is the money like?
I earn around $51,000 a year and I am only just starting out. It's pretty competitive especially for a beginner.

How did you get to where you are today?
I'm only just starting out in my career in ICT, but I've always had a basic plan as to where I wanted to go. Putting in the hours at ECU gave me all the tools I needed to get to where I am now.

What made you decide to work in ICT?
I have always had an interest in the field. The decision to start a career in ICT came when I realised I could make a real success of it. It is a very flexible and versatile industry and that is a real attraction.

Is the ICT industry what you expected?
The image that most people have about people working in ICT is fairly stereotypical. Its not at all geeks and nerds. The people I have met in the industry vary from potential writers to chemical engineering enthusiasts.

What do you find interesting about working in ICT?
Constant change. There are an infinite number of things to learn as new concepts are developed every day.

Where do you see your job in ICT taking you?
I don't see my "job" taking me anywhere, rather, I feel with a background in ICT I'm in a position to take myself wherever I want to go. This field offers so much, you can change your direction at any time and feel confident about making changes.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in ICT?
Go for it - if you are interested. The sky is definitely not the limit.

Why would you encourage others to get into the ICT industry?
The field is so unique, vast and interesting - it's hard not to get hooked once you are in. It is challenging and gives you a sense of achievement. Every time you master a new technology, you feel like you have really achieved something. It also allows you to have a life outside of work. I love music and I still have time to play gigs and do some recording on the side!
