Lloyd Johnson - Web Development

View Video (High Res) (Low Res)

Bio: Went to All Saints College - started my own business after uni.

What do you do?
I am the owner of a small web development and online marketing business called SpinnaWeb.

What do you love about your work?
The freedom that my work provides is fantastic. One day I am dealing with the intricacies of business systems for a manufacturer and the next day I am helping a Pilates studio with their email marketing. The variety always keep me interested!

What is the money like?
It is not the salary that motivates me. There is tremendous capacity to make a difference to other businesses through effective use of ICT and it is much more rewarding to me when I help them succeed rather than when I bank their cheque. When you're helping other businesses and people succeed the salary more than takes care of itself.

How did you get to where you are today?
I attribute where I am today to the time I spent networking. Without networking I wouldn't have any clients. Networking has also been invaluable for making friends that I can ask for help when problems crop up that are outside my experience.

What made you decide to work in ICT?
Computers have always been a part of my life, since my Dad first brought a laptop home from work when I was six. I've always enjoyed using them and I get a buzz out of helping other people get the most out of them.

Is the ICT industry what you expected?
There aren't as many "geeks" in the ICT industry as I expected! Generally the people are really friendly, especially in the web industry where there is a real community spirit.

What do you find interesting about working in ICT?
The biggest attraction of the ICT Industry is the variety - you never get bored!

Where do you see your job in ICT taking you?
I think that eventually I will be in a position where I have several staff and most of my time is spent working on my business, rather than behind a keyboard cutting code.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in ICT?
Just do it! There truly is something for everyone in ICT - it's relevant to every area of our lives. Even if you later decide to be something complete different, like a vet or a teacher, the IT skills will still be invaluable and give you a real edge in your industry.

Why would you encourage others to get into the ICT industry?
There is loads of work out there - people are just crying out for competent and trustworthy ICT professionals. The work is interesting and you can have a lot of fun while making a very comfortable living.
