Stacey Maslin - ICT Student
What do you do?
I am in my final year studying a Bachelor of Computer Technology at the Southwest Campus of ECU.
What do you love about your course?
The best thing about the projects that I have worked on during my studies is that each one is a new challenge, you are creating something new each time and there is always something to learn.
What do you think the money will be like?
The jobs that I have seen advertised seem to pay very well compared to other industries with similar qualification requirements.
How did you get to where you are today?
This is my second career. I was previously working as a medical laboratory technician.
What made you decide to get into ICT?
I needed a new challenge. The ICT industry interested me because of the attractive salaries, the wide range of jobs available for graduates and the flexible working conditions - I have young children.
Are your studies in ICT what you expected?
It is much more involved than I thought, its not just about programming and hardware. There are so many different areas that you can study like computer security, eCommerce, project management, and web development. Because there is so much variety and change, it is an exciting area to be in.
Where do you see your studies in ICT taking you?
I'd like to get into web development or work as an analyst or programmer. My long-term goal is to run my own eCommerce and web development business in the South West of WA.
What advice would you give someone considering studies in ICT?
Give it a try. I did not have a lot of computer experience when I started the course but I have always enjoyed science and I picked up lots of skills as the course progressed. There are so many different areas of computer science you are sure to find one that takes you interest.
Why would you encourage others to get into the ICT industry?
The great salaries and the abundance of work in ICT.
