If you're interested in research, this is an area of strength in WA, and we host many cooperative Research Centres and Centres of Excellence's as well as Technology Park. Research carried out at the centres often leads to the commercialisation of products - so it isn't just about academia. WATRI, a joint venture between Curtin University and UWA that's focused on telecommunications research, for example, has established four start-up companies: ISPire Networks Pty Ltd, Sensear Pty Ltd, Xelor Software and Atmosphere Networks.
Another centre and focal point for advanced computing is iVEC, which is a joint venture involving CSIRO, Central TAFE, Curtin and Murdoch Universities and UWA. iVEC has three facilities providing access to cutting-edge, high-performance computing and visualisation laboratories via grid technologies and e-Research services. AMTC (Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Centre) at Central TAFE also provides an R&D service to help companies develop new products from concept to prototype - and beyond.
Technology Park, Bentley is home to over 100 organisations, most of them involved in ICT. Tech Park generates major research activity from CoEs such as CSIRO and the Australian Resources Research Centre. The WA Government is expanding the park into a precinct where people can work, research, network, live and play. The aim is to transform it into Australia's premier ICT destination. This is just a small sample of the centres in WA that support serious, technology-related R&D!
